  • When I See

When I See was inspired by the biblical account of Abraham, who took a three days' journey through the wilderness, knowing he was being asked to sacrifice his son at the end of that journey. What thoughts were running through his mind as he looked up into the stars?

The song has Abraham moving from reflecting on who he is, and how God sees him, to knowing what God is asking, and finally understanding that God isn't asking him to do anything He hasn't done himself, namely, to offer His own Son as a sacrifice. Then he understands the glory of God, and God's love. The instrumental in the middle represents the time when Abraham is praying to, and listening to, the Father who is teaching him about the atonement. We all go through "Abrahamic trials," and it is good to remember that the Lord doesn't ask us to do anything harder than He himself has done.

When I see, truly see, all the stars across the heavens,
And to me they seem as countless as the sands upon the sea,
Then I see the Father's glory, and I feel the Father's love,
And I wonder what it is He sees in me.

When I see, truly see, all the things that I've been given,
For He's promised me a blessing as the sands upon the sea,
Then I see the Father's glory, and I feel the Father's love,
And I wonder what it is He asks of me.

When I see, truly see, that He truly is my Father,
And for me He's made atonement through His own Begotten Son,
Then I know my Father's glory, and I know my Father's love,
And I know just what it is He's asked of me.

For I know He knows just what He's asked of me.
