  • Amazing Grace

    Amazing Grace is a beloved hymn of hope, strength, faith, and the gift of God's amazing grace. This arrangement is for an a cappella SSA choir, but a piano can easily be added on the vocal parts as needed. This is a simplified version of the full SATB version and is based on the first three verses of that arrangement. For more information, please consult the description for that arrangement here. The piece starts in unison, as if in the Negro Spiritual tradition. The second verse is in two parts, the third in three.

    *Also available: arrangement for TTB or full-length SATB version  (See more purchase options below) See full lyrics in the Lyrics tab.

  • Lyrics

    Text: John Newton*
    Music: Traditional, arr. Cathy Neff (ASCAP)

    Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
    That saved a wretch like me!
    I once was lost, but now am found,
    Was blind, but now I see.

    'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
    And grace my fears reliev'd;
    How precious did that grace appear,
    The hour I first believ'd!

    Thro' many dangers, toils and snares,
    I have already come;
    'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
    And grace will lead me home.

    THESE NEXT VERSES AVAILABLE ONLY IN THE SATB VERSION:

    The Lord has promis'd good to me,
    His word my hope secures;
    He will my shield and portion be,
    As long as life endures.

    Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
    And mortal life shall cease;
    I shall possess, within the veil,
    A life of joy and peace.

    The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
    The sun forbear to shine;
    But God, who call'd me here below,
    Will be forever mine.

    *NOTE: The lyrics used in this arrangement are John Newton's original lyrics to "Amazing Grace." Another popular verse, added later by someone else, is not included in this arrangement. The verse that is not included is:

    When we've been there ten thousand years,
    Bright shining as the sun,
    We've no less days to sing God's praise
    Then when we've first begun.
