Amazing Grace - SATB

Audio

  • Amazing Grace

    Amazing Grace is a beloved hymn of hope, strength, faith, and the gift of God's amazing grace. This arrangement is for an a cappella SATB choir, but a piano can easily be added on the vocal parts as needed. The piece starts in unison, as if in the Negro Spiritual tradition. The second verse is in two parts, the third in three, the fourth in four, and a soprano divisi even gives us the touch of five part harmony at times. Each verse is a different feel and treatment of the original words by John Newton. The harmony progresses until there is a rich colorful blend of harmonies by the last verse. The voice leadings and part-writing are intelligent and intuitive to make the reading of this piece as seamless as possible for your choir. This is a must have for your choir's a cappella repertoire.

    *Also available: a shorter, simplified version of this arrangement for SSA or TTB based on the first three verses only of the SATB version. (See more purchase options below)

    Text: John Newton*
    Music: Traditional, arr. Cathy Neff (ASCAP)

    Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
    That saved a wretch like me!
    I once was lost, but now am found,
    Was blind, but now I see.

    'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
    And grace my fears reliev'd;
    How precious did that grace appear,
    The hour I first believ'd!

    Thro' many dangers, toils and snares,
    I have already come;
    'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
    And grace will lead me home.

    The Lord has promis'd good to me,
    His word my hope secures;
    He will my shield and portion be,
    As long as life endures.

    Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
    And mortal life shall cease;
    I shall possess, within the veil,
    A life of joy and peace.

    The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
    The sun forbear to shine;
    But God, who call'd me here below,
    Will be forever mine.

    *NOTE: The lyrics used in this arrangement are John Newton's original lyrics to "Amazing Grace." Another popular verse, added later by someone else, is not included in this arrangement. The verse that is not included is:

    When we've been there ten thousand years,
    Bright shining as the sun,
    We've no less days to sing God's praise
    Then when we've first begun.
